The 1992-93 Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks made history as the first high school
senior girls’ volleyball team from Kent County to win an OFSAA championship at any level.
The Golden Hawks hosted the OFSAA 'AA' tournament at CKSS on March 9-11, 1993, and went
undefeated with a perfect 6-0 match record and a 12-0 win-loss record.
CKSS swept Oshawa G.L. Roberts Lakers (15-4, 15-8), Ottawa Louis Riel Rebels (15-7, 15-6) and North
Bay Chippewa Raiders (15-9, 15-10) in pool play before eliminating Aylmer East Elgin (15-1, 16-14) in
the quarterfinals and General Amherst (15-4, 15-9) in the semifinals in a rematch of the SWOSSAA
championship.
The Golden Hawks clinched the gold medal with a dominating performance over Brockville Collegiate
(15-3, 15-7) in the final.
For the season, the Golden Hawks posted an overall 122-17 record, including tournament wins at York
University, Stratford Central and at CKSS while finishing second at the University of Windsor and were
semifinalists at London Saunders.
The Golden Hawks went 6-1 in the Kent County championship tournament, sweeping Wallaceburg 3-0 in
the semifinals before beating Blenheim in the finals 3-1.
CKSS allowed only 12 points in the SWOSSAA playoffs as they swept St. Joseph (15-3. 15-3) in the
semifinals and General Amherst (15-5, 15-1) for the championship.
Several members of the '92-93 champions won a second straight OFSAA in '93-94 when they won the
gold medal in Ottawa.
The nucleus of these championship teams won Kent and SWOSSAA junior championships in 1991 and
'92 with a combined 124-4 record.
The 1992-93 team was coached by Randy Bartlett and Linda Corrente.
Team members included Stephanie Borrowman, Tina Botterill, Joanne Cornelius, Sarah Dolsen, Jen
Jakovac, Michelle Stenton, Carrie Lundy, Sarah Mallett, Shannon McTavish, Jodi Prangley, Melissa
Rodger, Deb Shepherd, Corrine Ronson, and Emily Livingstone. A number of these athletes went on to
play university volleyball and many have joined the coaching ranks as well.
