Derek was born in Chatham on June 21st, 1989 with cerebral palsy, however never allowed his limitations deter him from becoming a world-class athlete. He attended St. Vincent elementary and Ursuline College/Chatham Kent Secondary School before going to Medicine Hat College, where he earned a Bachelor of Education Degree from Mount Royal University.

Career Highlights

Derek represented Canada in para ice hockey and para 7-aside soccer at the National and World levels and was also a Provincial team golf champion.

Hockey
2000 - started playing para ice hockey (formally Sledge) with the Chatham Sledgehammers at age 11. 2007-2017 - played for Canada's National Para Hockey Teams

2007-2008 - Derek was also a notable golfer, playing in the Burger King Junior Tour.

After

Derek and his beautiful wife Tara live in Medicine Hat, Alberta with their dog Doug. Derek teaches a combined grade 5/6 class at St. Francis Xavier School and is the lead instructor/developer for the school’s sport academy.
Since 2014, Derek has been an assistant coach with Canada’s Women’s National Para Ice Hockey team.
Derek along with Tara, have worked hard to start an all-inclusive non-profit organization called - Medicine Hat Adaptive Sport and Recreation - which brings Paralympic sports to the community.
