SPORT | Track and Field / Cross Country

POSITION | Coach, Broadcaster, Announcer "The Voice of Chatham-Kent Sports"

YEAR OF INDUCTION | 2025

Peter Cobb has been the face and voice of athletics in Chatham for close to a half-century.
Peter raised the profile of local athletics for 45 years through his volunteerism as a teacher, coach, official,
convenor and most notably with his passion and enthusiasm behind a microphone as a broadcaster and
interviewer.
As a teacher starting in 1985 and into his retirement, Peter volunteered as a coach and convenor for
several elementary school sports including soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and field and wrestling. He
also coordinated a school curling instructional program.
Peter is also active in community sports, including as a coach and executive member of the Chatham
Minor Baseball Association (1991-92 Chairman) and 20 years as a coach and director in the Chatham
Ringette Association.
But it is Peter's work behind the microphone and camera that has elevated local athletics to major league
status.
He was introduced to the microphone in high school as the game announcer at CCI Cougars' basketball
games, with the encouragement from teacher/coach Ed Myers.
In 1979, he made his television debut providing play-by-play on Cogeco's Red Feather football broadcast
along side Bill Robinson.
Since then, Peter has been a part of Cogeco's volunteer broadcast team for elementary and secondary
school championship game telecasts for over four decades.
Peter does the play-by-play with a unique, electrifying style. He does his homework to provide interesting
tidbits on the individual students and schools to give the broadcast a professional atmosphere while
making the players feel like stars.
His unbridled enthusiasm led to being asked to emcee at the Parade of Chefs, Festival of Giving,
Blenheim Terry Fox Run, St. Clair River Run and many other community events.
Peter's broadcasting talent goes beyond the Chatham-Kent border as he provided play-by-play for the
1995 National Ringette Championships and the 2015 OUA Women's Volleyball Championship in Guelph.
Peter, along with Shawn Moynihan, are beginning their 11
th
season as the broadcast team for the

livestream of University of Guelph Gryphons' football.
Peter has also been a part of CKXS-FM 99.1's sports team since the station went on the air in 2009 and
from 2014 – 2020 he co-hosted CK Sports Talk, a weekly sports radio show with Moynihan and Pete
McCarter as they interviewed local athletes as well as professional and Olympic stars.
He was also a part of CKXS-FM 99.1's Junior 'C' radio broadcasts of games involving the Dresden Kings,
Wallaceburg Lakers and Blenheim Blades from 2016-20.
Peter remains active today as the play by play broadcaster for the Chatham Maroons and media host for
the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers.
What is especially amazing, Peter has performed all of his broadcast duties on a volunteer basis, only
accepting compensation for expenses.
A true 'Local Sports Historian', Peter has promoted athletics and the athletes from Chatham with a genuine
passion and unbridled enthusiasm which in itself, makes Peter Cobb a major part of the legacy of the local
sports scene.
