Ron was born in Chatham, attended Ste-Catherine Separate School, and then Chatham-Kent Secondary School from 1972 to 1977. While at CKSS he excelled in volleyball, track and field, and particularly basketball. After graduation Ron attended St. Mary's University in Halifax where he won individual and team honours during his 4 years of basketball. He represented his province and his country as a member of provincial and national basketball teams.

    • Team most valuable player (1975, '76 and '77) - league leading scorer (1976 & '77);
      Jaycee Blue & White Tournament All-Star (1977) - member of OFSSA Basketball Champions (1977)

    • CKSS Athlete of the Year - inducted into CKSS Hall of Fame (1979) - Ontario Junior Basketball Team member for 1976 Canada Games St. Mary's University

    • Twice member of CIAU National Championship team (1978 & '79); once CIAU Finalist (1982) after winning first 32 games of the year and losing in the National final game to University of Victoria; Twice AUAA All Star (1980 & '81)

    • Concordia Invitational MVP (1981) - CIAU Tournament All - Star (1982); St. Mary's Team Captain (1982); St. Mary's Basketball MVP (1982) - still holds 2 CIAU records, one-game field goal percentage at 100% (13 for 13 attempts) against Mt. Allison and career field goal percentage at 62.9%
